I am now sufficiently settled into Missouri life to be ready to think of myself as "in Missouri." Thus, you will notice that "Jared in Kansas" is a thing of the past. I have decided not to try to change all of my internet presence to JaredMO - I'm justifying it through the idea that Kansas will always be an integral part of me. The truth, of course, is that it's far too much work and would be confusing. Nonetheless, now we have Missouri here on the blog, and over on the Etsy shop.

The above image is one of a series of square images captured this first Missouri winter. I have not titled any of them - I think they work nicely together and separately, quiet, without names.

We now live much farther from civilization than I had anticipated when we first set off in this direction. It is true that a relatively short car ride can bring a person to the city, which is what fooled me in the first place. It is also true, however, that something about the place discourages car rides altogether. I am walking, picking on my guitar, and staying out of town.

The light was wonderful this morning. First foggy, then the sun bursting through, then fog again, clouds passing by in the sunrise. Just amazing.

Sadly, I watched most of it from my classroom window, whimpering. I had time to stop in Keats on the way to work to take a few shots of one of my favorite trees.

If my job didn't pay so well, I would have had lots of neat shots to share this evening, but the mortgage won again!

This was taken *almost* a year ago, in late March. I am so impatiently waiting for everything to bloom. As previously announced, the crocus are back, and we noticed some green in the lawn this morning.

Renewal

Each year, many of the farmers and ranchers in this area burn some or all of their fields. My understanding is that it returns nutrients to the soil and results in better production from the land. Prairies used to be burned periodically by vast wildfires caused by lightning, but now we fight those off, so for the land to be what it was, it needs burning.

That's my amateur understanding of it, anyhow.

In any event, it's gorgeous. The parts that have already burned smoke and smoke and smoke. There's an uneven line of fire that creeps ever so slowly across the field, but somehow when you look back at a spot, it's moved more than you think it should have. The smell alone is wonderful, bringing back childhood campfires.

With any luck, here in the next few weeks, I'll find myself near a field with camera in hand.

The Crocus are Back

Nonetheless, the news remains the same: the crocus are back. I don't care if it snows tomorrow, it's now spring in Kansas, and I'm a happy guy.

Spring is on the Way

Right now, the front yard is brown with light brown grass on top (plus a bunch of little sticks still left over from the ice storm), but *soon* everything will begin to bloom and grow. It's going to rain, and plants will sprout leaves and flowers.

Best of all, by April, we will have dandelions again. I love dandelions.

Icy Outhouse

Now that the days are getting longer and warmer, I'm finally ready to take a look at some of my photographs from December's crazy ice storm.

This is a photograph of the outhouse next door. I'm told there used to be a house on the lot, but it was lost to a fire years ago. The outhouse is no longer in use, to my knowledge, but it's an interesting little building.

The ice storm, if you weren't around for it, covered *everything* with a layer of ice. We lost power for a few days. It was a hassle, but it was certainly gorgeous.

Sprague Lake

Sprague Lake was surprisingly not busy, despite the fact that the lake is just right there next to the parking lot - accessible by a flat trail. Everyone should go on this hike, no matter how hike-phobic they may be.

When I was there, it rained a little bit, and I got to see my third rainbow of the day. I wasn't able to get any photographs I loved out of that, but I dig the lake anyhow.

We were lucky enough to spend this past weekend at Rocky Mountain National Park. The aspen were just starting to turn, and I found a few of these gorgeous yellow trees at the shore of Bear Lake Saturday.

An absolutely wonderful experience. If you've never been to the park, I highly recommend it. I can't wait to go back.

Lower Falls of the Yellowstone

I am always amazed by the beauty and the power of waterfalls. This was one of the first waterfalls to amaze me as a child, and it was a treat to see it again this summer. Everyone should see Yellowstone at least once.

If I could transport my loved ones and myself to any one place in the world at this very moment, it would be to the Old Faithful Inn. So tranquil, quiet and peaceful, despite the crowds. I loved the time we spent there, and I look forward to when we'll get a chance to return.

If you've never been, do yourself the favor of spending an evening, whether you opt to spend the night or not.

Grand Canyon

I can't wait to get back to explore the Grand Canyon more thoroughly. I want to do the rim to rim hike, raft the river, the whole deal. It was magnificent just from the rim - I can only imagine what it will be like to see it in depth.

Jackson Lake

Grand Teton National Park was extraordinarily beautiful. Of all the places we visited during our trip, this was the one I would first jump at the chance to spend a week or two. It was calm, quiet, relaxing, and gorgeous. I hope to make it back for a more extended visit before too much time passes.

Beehive Geyser

We saw a number of geysers go off, but this one was particularly fun, since it's less predictable than some of the other large geysers. The amount and the force of the water was incredible.

Bryce Canyon Tunnel

More beauty from Bryce Canyon. This tunnel is part of the below-the-rim trail that we hiked. The tricky part about hiking into a canyon is that the end of the hike is all uphill. Gets a bit tiring, but well worth it.

Yellowstone Hot Spring

Just the first of the Yellowstone photographs. We spent about a third of our trip at Yellowstone, and it's my favorite park, no matter the crowds. It's one of a kind. Here's a shot I grabbed during one of my walks around the Upper Geyser Basin in the evenings with the boys.

Sunrise over Bryce Canyon

Bryce Canyon was a wonderful surprise, exceedingly beautiful, peaceful, and calm. The reddish color is stunning, and I found it very difficult to capture with my camera.

I like a handful of the photographs I brought home from Bryce Canyon, but I didn't fully capture that ethereal red. I have some ideas for the next time I'm there, but that may be years, if I ever do make it back.

If you're ever in the area, be sure to check out Bryce Canyon, and I recommend staying the night. The sunrise is chilly, but spectacular.

Landscape Arch

If you ever make it out to Arches National Park, I highly recommend the mile hike out to Landscape Arch. It's over 100 yards long, and tantalizingly thin. It looks like it may come down at any moment. Hurry up and see it before it's too late!

Animas River

Not a national park photograph, but this is part of the San Juan National Forest. This photograph was taken from the Durango-Silverton Narrow Guage train. It was a long but beautiful ride.

Canyonlands

Another beautiful park with few fellow visitors. Canyonlands is stunning, but it does take some of the "wow" out of the Grand Canyon - just a heads up.

Great Sand Dunes

Probably the most suprising national park, I just loved Great Sand Dunes. To get to the dunes, you cross a beautiful mountain stream by foot, and then it's a seemingly endless amount of sand to play with. You have free range of the stream and the dunes, so you can go off to a place by yourself, or you can play with others. It's very pleasant, and I'm sure I'll go back.

If you ever find yourself in southern Colorado, I highly recommend a visit to this park.

My absolute favorite place to hike, to take photographs, the Konza Prairie is a fantastically gorgeous place in all seasons. This is one of the best times to be out there, because there are so many varieties of wildflowers blooming right now, and the smells are phenomenal. If you're anywhere nearby, I encourage you to get out for a walk.

Any day on the Konza is a good day.

Waterfall

Yet another spot of beauty in the Flint Hills of northeast Kansas, this was shot at place called Pillsbury Crossing. The story goes that the limestone shelf that the water is falling over was used by pioneers to get across the river on their way west. Why they wouldn't want to stay in Kansas, I can't imagine!

Pause For a Funny Story

So I'm not planning to use this space for funny family moments - not that there's anything wrong with that - but this one was photography related, so I thought I'd share.

The boys and I were discussing our favorite times of the year. I was arguing for spring, but Caleb (the 10-year-old) mentioned that it was tornado season.

So I explained that I would *love* to see a tornado, because I didn't have any tornado pictures, and I would love to be able to offer tornado photographs. That was when 5-year-old Jonas piped up in the sweetest voice:

"Do you know what that would make you do, Dad? . . . Die."

Purple Prairie

The wildflowers haven't returned to the prairie quite yet this year, so I decided to pull one from last spring. This one was taken out at the Konza Prairie last May, which tells me I don't have much longer to wait this year.

No Longer Collecting Energy

One of my favorite images from last winter. I find this scene very compelling. The prairie is gorgeous to me. When this windmill was put up, it was probably well out in the middle of nowhere. Now it can be driven by at 60 miles per hour, and it's probably rarely noticed. One of the things I love about taking photographs is that it forces me to pay closer attention and look for beauty where I might not have noticed it before.

Grassland Thunderstorm

Probably my all-time favorite image, it kills me that I've misplaced the negatives.

The Konza Prairie is like home to me. I love to walk the trails, smell the air, and just be there. I also love thunderstorms. The energy is palpable, and it moves me when storms pass through.

This image was from the day these two passions intersected. It probably wasn't wise of me to stay up on top of the hills for as long as I did - I've been told on tours that they lose a bison almost every year to lightning - but since I was there I had to take a few images before I got out of there.

Blue Dandelion

So the forecasted snow never materialized - go figure - but I had my heart set on shooting dandelions this morning. Here is one of our "yard pests." It's funny to me to think of all the wonderful people who spend hours and hours trying to keep dandelions out of their lawns, and here I am searching for them in mine. Love them.

Wow, have I been looking forward to the return of dandelions. I looked outside tonight and saw some gorgeous light, so I went straight outside. To my surprise, there was a dandelion waiting for me to shoot. Happy times.

The cat decided to get in the way of this one, but then it turned out that I liked it more than the others, so here it is.

I absolutely love this image. When I originally posted this to Flickr, it was about a month after the dandelion photo had been so popular, and I was just sure this was going to be the next hugely popular shot on my photostream, but not so.

I have debated as to whether or not to offer this one on Etsy, but here it is. One of the interesting things I have learned about selling photographs is that the ones that are popular on Flickr are not necessarily the same ones that sell on Etsy. Go figure.

Konza Trail

I've debated with myself for a long time about whether or not to offer this photograph for sale. I love it, but I've lost the original negative, and all I have is this scan. Before you buy, note the handful of imperfections due to the scan.

Folks enjoy the horse photo, even though it has the same problems, so I decided I'd post this one and see what sort of reception it gets.

I got this photograph on absolutely the most photogenic Konza Prairie photowalk I've ever taken. Storms were moving in, the sun was going down, the light was perfect, the clouds were dark, the wind was blowing - just perfect. I have a few other shots from this walk that I love - I may add more later.

Accidental Self-Portrait

In the process of photographing the example framed print for listing in my Etsy shop, I accidentally took a couple self-portraits. I didn't use this one for the listing, but I thought it might make for a fun blog picture.

I've had a number of people tell me they'd like to have the option of having me do the matting and/or framing for their photograph purchases, so it's now up as an option. I'm excited to see how popular it will be.

In other news, I am now working on my very first homemade frame. Currently I am on the first glue-drying step.

Heather pointed out yesterday that my blog posts were getting to be shorter and shorter, so I'm hopeful she'll be happier with this one.

Spring Snow

So I imagine the freak April snow shower didn't please most people, but it made this photographer giddy. I love images that contrast two or more major themes that at first thought are contradictory - here I get to contrast the gorgeous spring blossoms with icy snow. I may post a few more of these in the days to come, but this is the one that grabbed my attention first.

Pink Rain

I have wrestled with myself over whether or not to list this one, but it's growing on me, so I figured it might grow on all of you wonderful people also. I've been using it as one of my shop banners, and I just plain like it.

This one is from the same shoot as my other Magnolia photograph. It was my first time trying to capture a magnolia tree - they've already lost their blooms here in Kansas, so I have 11 and 1/2 months to consider what to do next year.

Memories of Spring

My favorite spring-time picture from last year, this one didn't make it off of my computer until December, when I was scouring through old photographs to find hidden gems that hadn't caught my attention initially.

This was taken the same day that I captured a gorgeous sunrise, and the sunrise photograph was so popular it didn't occur to me to post this one at the time. By late December, the color and the warmth were so inviting it was a natural to post it, and now it is among my best-selling images on Etsy - and I still haven't listed that sunrise. Go figure.

Roadside Weeds

One of my favorite activities is to pull over to the side of the road and shoot whatever flowers might be living in the ditch. This particular shot earned me muddy shoes.
